Sarasota’s emergency dental care

Emergency Dentist in Sarasota: Urgent Care When You Need It Most

Dental emergencies do not wait for convenient moments. A sudden crack while eating dinner, a throbbing pain that wakes you at 3 a.m., an implant that feels loose after a fall, and when these moments happen, you need good specialists who handle complex cases every single day.

At Misch Implant & Aesthetic Dentistry, we offer same-day emergency appointments for existing patients facing dental crises. Whether it is severe tooth pain, a knocked-out tooth, an infection that is spreading, or an implant complication, our team of board-certified specialists is equipped to diagnose quickly, relieve your pain, and when necessary provide definitive treatment in the same visit.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental issue requires emergency care, but some absolutely do. Understanding the difference can save your tooth, prevent serious infection, and spare you unnecessary suffering.

Severe Tooth Pain That Won't Subside

A toothache that keeps you from eating, sleeping, or concentrating is not something to "wait out" since persistent and intense pain usually signals that something serious is happening beneath the surface, such as an infection reaching the nerve, a crack extending into the root, or an abscess forming in the bone. Over-the-counter painkillers might dull the pain temporarily, but they will not fix the underlying problem, and the longer you wait, the more complex and expensive treatment becomes.

Knocked-Out or Displaced Teeth

Time is critical when a tooth gets knocked out due to trauma. If you can get to us within 30 to 60 minutes with the tooth stored properly in milk or held gently in your cheek, there is a real chance we can reimplant it successfully. Every minute that passes reduces those odds, and if reimplantation is not possible, we can discuss immediate replacement options, including same-day implant placement in certain cases.

Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Teeth

A small chip might be cosmetic, but a significant crack or break, especially one that exposes the inner layers of the tooth or extends below the gum line, needs immediate attention. Bacteria can infiltrate exposed tooth structure within hours, preparing the ground for infection, and if the fracture reaches the root, you may need extraction and replacement instead of a simple repair.

Dental Implant Complications

A dental abscess, that painful, pus-filled swelling near a tooth or in your gums, is never something to ignore since if untreated the infection can spread to your jaw, neck, and even your bloodstream (sepsis). Signs include severe throbbing pain, fever, swelling in the face or cheek, and a foul taste in the mouth, and if you are experiencing these symptoms, call us immediately because this is a true emergency.

Infections and Dental Abscesses

A dental abscess—that painful, pus-filled swelling near a tooth or in your gums—is never something to ignore. Left untreated, the infection can spread to your jaw, neck, and even your bloodstream (sepsis). Signs include severe throbbing pain, fever, swelling in your face or cheek, and a foul taste in your mouth. If you're experiencing these symptoms, call us immediately. This is a true emergency.

Lost Fillings, Crowns, or Dental Restorations

When a filling falls out or a crown comes loose, the underlying tooth becomes suddenly exposed and vulnerable. Although this may not cause immediate pain, bacteria can quickly infiltrate the unprotected tooth structure, leading to decay or infection, so if you have lost a restoration, try to keep it and call us immediately. We can often re-cement a crown the same day or place a temporary restoration to protect the tooth until a permanent solution is ready.

What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

While you are on your way to see us or waiting for our office to open, there are steps you can take to protect your tooth and manage discomfort:

For Severe Tooth Pain

Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water to reduce bacteria and soothe irritated tissue, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), following the dosage instructions on the package. Avoid aspirin if there is any bleeding, as it can thin your blood and worsen bleeding, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.

For a Knocked-Out Tooth (Trauma)

Handle the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root, and if it is dirty rinse it gently with water, but do not scrub or remove any attached tissue. Try to place the tooth back in the socket if possible, but if that is too painful or difficult, store it in a small container of milk or hold it between your cheek and the gum. Get to our office as quickly as possible, for every minute counts.

For a Broken or Chipped Tooth

Save any pieces of the tooth you can find and rinse your mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze, use a cold compress on the outside of the face to minimize swelling, and avoid chewing on that side of the mouth until you meet us.

For a Lost Crown or Filling

If you can find the crown, try placing it back over the tooth temporarily using denture adhesive, or even a small amount of toothpaste, just do not use super glue. If the area is sensitive, clove oil (available at most pharmacies) can provide temporary relief, and then call us to schedule a same-day appointment.

The Importance of Specialists in a Dental Emergency

Most dental offices can handle basic emergencies, but what happens when your situation is complex? Or when that broken tooth needs extraction and you hope to avoid months without a tooth? When the infection has spread to the bone or when your dental implant is failing?

Excellence in Sarasota

Board-Certified Specialists Under One Roof

At Misch you are not seeing a general dentist who occasionally handles emergencies, but a team that includes Dr. Craig Misch (oral surgeon and prosthodontist), Dr. Maggie Misch-Haring (periodontist), Dr. Katherine Misch (prosthodontist), and Dr. Harry Haring (prosthodontist). When your emergency walks through our door, the right specialist is already here.

Advanced Technology for Precise Diagnosis

Emergencies require fast and accurate diagnosis, and our office is equipped with CBCT 3D imaging that allows us to see exactly what is happening beneath the surface, such as fractures invisible on standard X-rays, the extent of infection in the bone, and the position of impacted teeth. In other words, it is not guesswork. We investigate to have total certainty of the diagnosis because we know.

From Emergency to Definitive Treatment

Here is what sets us apart: we do not just do a patch job and send you elsewhere. If your emergency requires a tooth extraction, we can perform it. And if that extraction site needs bone grafting to preserve it for a future implant, we can do that in the same visit. If conditions allow for immediate implant placement (what we call the “same-day tooth” approach), we can place the implant while you are already numb: just one visit, one team, and a complete plan.

Sedation Options for Emergency Procedures

Dental emergencies are already stressful enough without adding anxiety about the procedure itself, so we offer sedation options, including IV sedation for more complex emergency treatments, to ensure you are comfortable the entire time. You should not have to go through emergency care with fear or extreme tension.

Implant Emergencies: A Specialty Within Our Specialty

If you have dental implants, whether placed here or elsewhere, and something goes wrong, you need a team specialized in implant care since general dentists often lack the training and equipment to properly diagnose and treat implant complications.

Signs of Implant Trouble

Contact us immediately if you feel pain or discomfort around an implant that was not there before, visible swelling or redness at the implant site, an implant that feels loose or moves when you bite, bleeding or pus around the implant, or if your implant crown feels different or has changed position. These symptoms can indicate peri-implantitis, mechanical failure, or other complications that require specialist intervention.

What We Can Do

Depending on the situation, we may be able to save the implant through deep cleaning and antimicrobial treatment, bone grafting to treat bone loss around the implant, or adjustments to the restoration, and in cases where the implant cannot be saved, we can remove it, graft the site, and plan for replacement, all coordinated by our in-house team.

Dental Emergencies FAQs

When you are in pain or going through a dental crisis, the last things you want are uncertainties. With that in mind, here are direct answers to the main questions about our emergency care.

Do you accept new patients for emergencies?

Our same-day emergency appointments are primarily reserved for existing patients, but if you are experiencing a severe dental emergency and cannot reach your regular dentist, call us, as we will do our best to help or direct you to appropriate care.

Call our main office number and our answering service will provide guidance based on your situation. For life-threatening emergencies involving difficulty breathing, severe bleeding that will not stop, or signs of spreading infection (high fever, difficulty swallowing), go directly to the emergency room.

Costs vary depending on the treatment required, and we will provide a clear estimate before proceeding with any treatment beyond the initial examination. Our focus during an emergency is stopping pain, preventing further damage, and stabilizing your condition, and therefore, we will discuss comprehensive treatment planning and costs once the crisis is managed.

Emergency rooms can provide pain relief and antibiotics for dental infections, but they typically cannot perform dental procedures, so for most dental emergencies you will receive faster and more appropriate care in a dental office. However, if you are experiencing a life-threatening situation, such as severe facial swelling affecting your breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma involving your jaw or head, the ER is the right choice.

It depends. Minor chips or a crown that fell off can often wait a day or two if you take precautions, but severe pain, signs of infection (swelling, fever, pus), a knocked-out tooth, or significant trauma should be treated immediately. When in doubt, call us, as we can help you determine whether your situation requires same-day care.

Don't Wait When It Matters Most

Dental emergencies have a way of getting worse, not better. That dull ache becomes unbearable pain, that small crack becomes a full fracture, and that small infection becomes a dangerous abscess. The sooner you receive proper care, the more options you have and the better your outcome will be.

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, call us immediately. We will get you out of pain, protect your teeth, and create a plan that addresses both the immediate crisis and your long-term oral health.
